Water tanker costs Rs.3000 in Bangalore - Severe Water Crisis
Water tanker costs Rs.3000 in Bangalore - Severe Water Crisis

Bangalore is experiencing Severe Water Scarcity. An apartment orders tankers 2 days ahead and still there is no guarantee of getting the water on time. The prices of Water have increased multi-fold with few buying a 6KL tanker for Rs.1500-3000. How can Apartments become sustainable with water ?We have been interacting with apartments for many years and we understand that the members leading the apartment association go through lot of struggle convincing people on the right things to be done for the apartment. However, few leaders in the apartment succumb to the politics of apartment and do things which is driven by 1 strong individual and finally make everyone suffer the consequences of wrong choices taken.Conventional Sources of Water?Borewells – Many apartments have many borewell for drawing water and there is an assumption that today my yield is very good better than any other apartment next door and we will never have water problem and 3 months later, they call and say all borewells are dry and we buy water.Rain Water – Only available during Rainy season.Roof Top Harvested rain water which is treated and used immediately.Surface water – Sent to the Recharge Pits. (Hoping to recharging the ground, not sure if it has gone to the drain sewage network or actually gone to the borewell)Tanker Water – Some apartments are perpetually dependent on Tankers and its assumed that the tanker brings the water from the best of the sources specially treated and cleaned for themMunicipal Water – Core cities areas get good supply of municipal area however the available water quantity is so low in most apartments that they depend on external water from any of the above sources.Amazing Source of Water Completely ignoredEnormous quantity of STP treated water which is used for Flushing and Garden and 60-65% of Treated water sent to the drain or Poured Lavishly to Gardens and Floor cleaning.Common Misinformation given to the Apartment Managing Committees: MYTH:We have not have any Excess STP treated water, we have 7 acres of Garden and we use everything there. We have Highly Accurate information from our Gardener. FACT: If you sow any common Plant example even Green Chilies research says it needs 0.2 Litre (200ml) per plant, per acre will need 3600 Litres (Depends on spacing of plant etc). As long you apartment does not have Sugarcane plantation or paddy cultivation you would not need much water for garden.Apartment SizeFresh waterFlushing Garden (3-5KL / acre).Total Excess per day200 Units 1,08,00036,00015,00057,000 300 Units1,62,00054,50015,000 92,500500 Units2,70,00090,00015,0001,65,000* All units in Litres. Assumptions: 3 Acre is considered for calculation ; 4 people/unit ; Calculation per dayImagine if this volume can be recovered back and got to your use, that can make the apartment lesser dependent on External water source. There is between 50-75% reduction in water purchase or Water depending on dwindling external water

Water Quality in Bangalore
Water Quality in Bangalore

When it comes to choosing water,
convenience comes first, price comes next and the most important “Quality”
comes last. Quality of water has direct impact on health of the individuals,
life of the appliances, construction quality, Industrial use or in simple words
poor quality water will have its impact created wherever it comes in contact
with. Like many other cities of India, Bangalore city primarily relies on
surface water bodies like lakes and reservoirs, along with groundwater
extraction, to meet its escalating demand. However, these sources are under
immense stress due to pollution, encroachment and mismanagement.Impact of water quality:Pollution: Industrial discharge, untreated
sewage, and solid waste pollution pose grave threats to Bangalore's water
bodies. Effluents from factories and sewage discharge contaminate both surface
and groundwater, jeopardizing the health and well-being of residents.Encroachment: Rapid urbanization has led to
the encroachment of lake beds and catchment areas, reducing the city's water
retention capacity. Illegal constructions and dumping of waste further
exacerbate the degradation of water quality.Depletion of Groundwater: Bangalore's
reliance on groundwater extraction has resulted in declining water levels and
deteriorating quality. Unregulated extraction practices coupled with
insufficient recharge mechanisms have led to a precarious situation, where
aquifers are overexploited and contaminated. What we should look into in terms of water
quality?Based on the usage, water quality
parameters to be measured varies. Drinking: Drinking water should meet the
potable standards as specified by BIS 10500:2012. TDS, Nitrates, Fluorides,
Aresenic, pH play a significant role in water quality in drinking water. Based
on source of water different water treatment systems are recommended. Domestic use:
Domestic use of water involves washing, bathing, cleaning, etc, When it comes
to domestic use, lesser the hardness is better as hard water leaves scaling on
appliances, poor wash quality, etc. In order to reduce the hardness, a
well-designed water softener to be installed. As the hardness increases,
treatment of water will be more challenging. When procuring water for domestic
use, pay attention to the below water quality parameters TDS, Hardness, Iron,
Total Coliforms, EColi. Re-use of STP treated water:  It is always good practice to re-use the STP treated water in
flushing, cooling towers, etc. However presence of colour, odour in the water
discourages people in re-using the STP treated water in flushing. Best practice
is to re-use as quickly as possible to reduce the odour & colour present in
the water. Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD), Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), Total
Suspended Solids (TSS), Total Nitrogen, Ammonical Nitrogen, Faecal Coliforms to
be measured. In case of Industrial use like cooling towers, apart from the
suspended solids, Hardness play a significant role, it is recommended to have
water softener but it comes with a limitation of regeneration, chemical
storage, etc. In Industries, water is predominantly used in boilers, as coolants, steam
generations & laundry. In all applications, most important aspect to be
addressed is TDS which has become a big challenge due to the higher utilization ground water. It is always recommended to look at alternate sources like
recovered potable water from the treated waste water. Drinking Water as per BIS 10500:2012
